Historic Prints French Military Uniforms (four) - Framed antiques (100 years+) - $99 - (Smithsburg, MD)

These four framed illustrations (More than 100 years in age) were given to me in 1960 by a good friend when I was living in Frankfurt Germany. I have been able to trace at least three of these illustrations to the Vinkhuijzen Collection of Military Uniforms. {“Prints and drawings collected by H.J. Vinkhuijzen, Amsterdam, 1910: Section on France”}. That collection is held at the New York Public Library. Information on the three ‘Army” illustrations is as follows: The armored knight is titled “Compte suivi de ses Vassaux” (Count followed by his Vassals) and is attributed to the 8th or 9th century. There is a tiny crack in the lower left hand corner of the glass. This mounted French Cavalryman “Cuirassier” is charging wearing his curassier (breastplate armor) and wielding a sword is shown as circa 1812. This type of cavalry first appeared in late 15th century Europe. The “Marechal de France” (Guilbaut and Penguilly - artists) is certainly from the Napoleonic era. These three frames are 7 ½” by 5 ¼” and have small hanging devices on the top in back. The fourth illustration has no title and seems to be a sailor. Note the white blotches on the left sleeve and left front of his jacket. I believe, but am no expert, that the blotches are from the original illustration not on this print itself. Because there are hundreds of illustrations of military uniforms in the Vinkhuijzen Collection I was not able to identify this one. The frame is the same type as the others but is slightly larger (8 ¼” X 6”). You can see the condition of all the illustrations in the photographs. Based on the date of the Vinkhuijzen Collection I have to believe these illustrations are from at least the early Twentieth Century, if not before. The frames, known by me to be more than half a century old, are naturally not in ‘like new condition’ but are certainly ready to be hung in a den or a room with a military theme. I will pack with the utmost care and ship at my e…
