Rare 18th Century Wood Family Figure of a Fox with a Game Bird DESCRIPTION: A Stunning Figure of a Fox sitting on its haunches with a game bird (pheasant) trapped beneath his front paws. DATE: c.1790 SIZE: 3 1/4" H x 4 3/8" W x 2 5/8" D ACQUIRED: In 2006 - from an established UK Dealer in Antique Staffordshire Pottery. REFERENCE: Frank Faulkner, The Wood Family of Burslem, plate XV MOULDING: A crisply moulded figure with an abundance of detail: in the fox's head, muzzle, ears, eyes, and the toes of each paw. You can see the fur on his body and especially the tail. The back leg shows knee and hock as he sits on his haunches and there is one separate foreleg claiming the game bird. The base is open underneath. Note very professional repairs to the tip of each ear. There are three firing cracks, which do not effect the integrity or stability of this figure; one inside the base, two under the neck. COLOURING:Coloured in the round. The body of the fox is basically white with translucent glaze spots in brown and yellow. There is a beautiful translucent green glaze to the forest floor, both in front and to the backside.A lovely blue-tinged glaze covers the entire figure, even inside the base, with pooling seen in pockets.
