6.25" RUSSET & WHITE SPANIEL PAIR DESCRIPTION: Pair of King Charles Spaniels, coloured in Russet and WhiteDATE: Victorian c.1855SIZE: No. 5 sized Spaniels: 6.5" in HeightACQUIRED: In 2007, from a respected UK Dealer in Antique Staffordshire PotteryREFERENCE: Adele Kenny, Staffordshire Spaniels. pages 58 and 61. MOULDING: Crisp moulding "in the round" is seen in the deep sculpting of the spaniels' hair coat, in the curls of the ears and chest. This pair is in very good condition with no restoration and no hairline cracks. The dogs' white-coloured muzzles have good depth and definition. There is normal crazing found all over each figure, commensurate with their age. The right side figure facing has a small chip to a back toe at the foot rim. This is not visible when displayed and does not effect the stability of the figure. Each dog has a vent hole to the reverse side. Both dogs have a lovely blue-tinged glaze with pooling in the deeper sculpted areas. COLOURING: Both dogs are well-painted and coloured as an example of flat back spaniels painted mainly on the front. There is an abundance of russet decoration and feathering all over their heads, front and back. There are painter's marks on the underside of each base, identifying the artists that applied the feathering and detail. Both faces are detailed with lots of russet feathering around the eyes. The noses, mouths and whiskers are done with delicate brush strokes. As one would expect with this smaller pair, there are some spots of paint loss to the russet markings from repeated handling. There are some russet paint touch-ups. Each spaniel wears a collar and locket in the original "best gold" characteristic of the earlier Victorian figures.
