Pre-historic Anasazi / Mimbres Frog Bowl Replication - $75 - (Springerville, AZ)
Up for your consideration is a contemporary replication of a bowl once created by a now extinct culture, the Mimbres. The Mimbres (circa 200 to 1150 A.D.) flourished in the southwestern desserts of prehistoric America. This Culture is believed to be an offshoot of the Anasazi Tribe, although due to geographic isolation their art took a divergent pathway which resulted in a wonderful depiction of the natural world they painted upon small to medium sizes ceramic bowls. Featured here is a replication of bowl which depicts what appears to be a frog. Of course this interpretation of the design is only conjecture and speculation as no written records exist to determine its exact meaning. It could be the Geico Insurance Lizard (there is a resemblance). At our small studio in the White Mountains of Arizona we attempt to preserve the prehistoric arts by creating realistic appearing replications of actual artifacts. The replication bowl was handmade and painted with homemade brushes. The smoky patina and rich fire clouds rendered upon its surface are the result of the open flame and pit firing process.
