An antique Ragtime, Dancin'-Dan, Black Americana Dixieland, Wooden Doll Toy - $95 - (Fairfield, IA)

Here is a wonderful, Black Americana, "Wonder Wooden Tap Dancer,” dating back to 1938. These wooden, jointed dancing dolls were manufactured by Associated Syndicate, Des Moines, Iowa. “Dancin-Dan” is designed to "dance" when he is held in your hand and tapped. Dan is 11-1/2" tall, looks homemade by a skillful wood craftsman and has a springy, jiggling neck with a solid waist but no wire handle. His arms swing back and forth when moved and his hips and legs are both jointed so they also swing back and forth. This is a rare, special, primitive Black Americana toy. This item is part of an extensive collection in a trust for a woman who believed it was important for ALL Americans to remember ALL of our history, just as it happened, with no "sugar coating." For us to know where we're going as a nation, it is important to know where we've been. This includes all aspects of white attitudes and relationships with black Americans since our inception as a nation, through generations of slavery, into the 20th Century, and beyond. Items like these, while possibly offensive to many, are an important component of this intention and that goal. Please accept them for both what they are and what they represent. Thank you.
