1883 "Without Cents" Liberty Head Nickel in BU+ Condition. When these newly designed nickels were introduced into circulation in 1883, some sharp not-so-honest individuals gold plated them and passed them off as $5.00 gold coins. There were only 5.4 million of these nickels produced at the Philadelphia Mint during the first half of the year and they are definitely under-priced compared to the 16 million nickels with CENTS added later in 1883.
