Antique French Toile de Jouy quilt 18th century c1795 - $1,350 - (Burlington, VT)
~*~Hello and thank you for looking~*~ ~An extremely rare and wonderful textile find ~ this STUNNING textile is an 18th century quilted textile dating c1795. The dramatic front fabric was most likely printed at the Jouy factory itself and is a very rare pattern. This wonderful textile is backed in a gorgeous dense, homespun hemp linen. This textile is made by hand stitching two long panels of the beautiful hand block printed fabric together down the middle to create the wider wide. The fabric was block printing using hand carved wooden blocks in the most stunning red tone. The ground is a wonderful and rare speckled ground in a beautiful madder purple tone. The printing process of this fabric was wonderfully complex and time consuming, beginning with the preparation of the cotton itself, which would have been prepared and field bleached in the sun for weeks before being printed. The hand quilting is done is a lovely sand toned tread. There is a thin cotton batting between the two layers. Both sides are hand stitched closed and the top and bottom are cut, with no hem. This textile would have most likely been used as part of a bed set, either as a cover or bed curtain .
