antique linen huck hand towel stamped for embroidery+cutwork, 27x15.75", unused - $11 - (Newark, DE)
I buy vintage linens at local estate auctions to pass them along to you. Isn't this fun? Along with a whole box of linen towels, I found this antique linen hand towel that is stamped for hand embroidery and cutwork, but never used. The towel measures 27" long by 15.75" wide and is made of linen in the huck weave often used in hand towels. It has mellowed to an ivory color. On the front it is stamped with edge scallops at both top and bottom, to be finished with buttonhole stitch and then trimmed. The front edge has a center decoration stamp of a butterfly 4" across with curved lines of small circles. There are additional lines of circles in varying sizes flanking the center design. I believe these were to be worked as cutwork, bound around the edges with the centers cut out, but you could do them as raised satin stitch if you pleased. The stamping is fairly faint, so please look carefully at the photos.Please use the zoom function to see the great details. This is in as-found condition, because I did not want to risk laundering away the stamping. The linen is soft and strong, not brittle, and there are no stains or holes anywhere, and no funky odors. I would love to see someone finish this! I am storing this in my smoke-free home, but I do have a cat who sheds copiously, so be aware if you have allergies.
