17409 Period Mahogany Carved Canopy Bed – Civil War Era - $985 - (Fairfield, ME)
We are pleased to be offering today this beautiful civil war era period canopy poster bed that dates from the 1850s era. The bed is all mahogany. The rails, four posts and headboard are original. I believe the cross member is original as well. The unique thing about this bed is that the headboard panel is actually hand carved, which is very unusual. This is what they call a flat tester bed. It is simply four flat boards that go into metal pins up top and your canopy is a simple cloth covering. The bed is pretty much all mahogany. I am sure it is not the original finish and it has likely been overcoated at least once. There are scuffs marks and nicks and dings here and there. I believe, because the posts are only 85 inches tall, that someone may have shortened this bed and that there may have been a large castor on the bottom of the foot. These beds were very hard to get into when the box spring and mattress were in place. The height of the rails are 12 inches before you would put on a box spring and mattress or a plywood base with a pillow top mattress. Those are things to think about when you purchase your bedding. The outside dimensions are 54 inches wide and 72 inches long. The height of the headboard is 37 inches high and the footboard is 28 inches high from the floor. A full size modern day mattress is 54 inches by 75 inches. If you would like this bed extended to accommodate a full-size mattress and box spring, please contact us prior to purchase to discuss the costs. It has a reddish brown mahogany stain finish. The bed breaks down to be moved easily. Shipping starts at $345 for our normal area. Please contact us prior to purchase to confirm shipping as it can increase as much as $100 the further from New England you go. 17409 Period Mahogany Carved Canopy Bed – Civil War Era Track Page Views WithAuctiva's FREE Counter
