Antique Mahogany Sideboard "Commode Louis XVI"--After Benneman & Stockel - $17,000 - (Ballston Spa, NY)

An early 20th Century, magnificent copy of the Commode Louis XVI. The rectangular case surmounted by molded white marble top, is fitted with three frieze drawers; vantaux opening to 6 larger drawers. Bronze-mounted side and front relief panels depict Diana and Cupid, or satyress and child satyr in different pursuits. Measurements37"h x 5'7"w x 26"d The original model was conceived by Stockel but altered at the command of the Garde-Meuble by German-born Guillaume Benneman, master cabinet maker in 1785, died 1811. He worked as a cabinet maker to the Crown between 1786 and 1792 as recorded as a relatively unknown maker employed by the Garde-Meuble Royale as an alternative to J H Riesener who had become too expensive in a difficult economic climate and Benneman was seen as a refreshing change to the old guard of Royal maker. The two original commodes, in 1786, were delivered for Marie Antoinette’s Salon des Jeux (Games Room), which are on display at Chateau de Fountainebleau. Listed is for ONE commode.
