UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION. Historically important letter from several prominent figures in Pelham, Massachusetts to, “Mr. Andrew Abercrombie, Constable of the Town of Pelham,” requesting that he oversee a, “meeting for the Town to Choose a Delegate to leave for a convention in Boston To approve of the United States Constitution.” HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT LETTER REQUESTING THAT THE CONSTABLE OF PELHAM, MASSACHUSETTS OVERSEE THE SELECTION OF A DELEGATE TO RATIFY THE NEWLY DRAFTED US CONSTITUTION The Massachusetts Ratifying Convention met in Boston from January 9 to February 5, 1788 to discuss the adoption of the newly drafted US Constitution. A total of 370 delegates had been elected in 1787 and, when the final vote was taken on February 6, 355 registered their vote and Massachusetts ratified the Constitution in a close vote of 187 to 168. New Hampshire was the ninth and last state to ratify the Constitution on June 21, 1788 allowing the Constitution to officially take effect. “GOVERN A MEETING FOR THE TOWN TO CHOOSE A DELEGATE TO LEAVE FOR A CONVENTION IN BOSTON TO APPROVE OF THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION” The letter is signed by Nathaniel Samson, John Bruce and other Pelham figures, two pages on a single leaf, sent from Pelham, MA in November 1787, measures 12” by 7.25”, and in very good condition with dampstaining. We were unable to locate any historical documents related to the selection of delegates over the ratification of the US Constitution making the present letter extremely rare and highly desirable.
