Rare Embroidered Antique Meiji JapaneseSilk Fukusa Gift Covering Tapestry For your consideration is this stunning antique fukusa (gift covering) from the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912). In the 1700s, the practice of placing a ceremonial textile cover over a gift box or tray was introduced in Japan by the nobles and lords. The choice of an appropriate fukusa was part of the gift-giving ritual. The richness of the decoration of the fukusa attests to the giver's wealth. After being admired, the fukusa was typically returned to its owner. This fukusa represents the story of Urashima Taro, a young fisherman, who is rewarded by rescuing a turtle by being carried on the turtle's back to the Dragon Palace which lies beneath the sea. He believes he spends a short time there when upon his return home, he finds himself 300 years in the future. Before leaving, he is given a box for a gift by Otohime, the Princess. When he opens the box he was told never to open, he turns into an old man. The fabric of this fukusa is made of indigo-dyed shusa satin silk and has hand embroidery and gold couching. It is in very good condition for its age. Some of the threads on the turtle's head are missing (see photo #5). These minor imperfections do not detract from the beauty of this antique fukusa.
