Antique Georgian ring. Gold and silver set with chrysoberyl. Made in Portugal circa 1785-1800. Measurements: Bezel is exactly 40mm long and 20mm wide. US size 6.5. Can easily be resized. Length of bezel is approximately 42mm. Background: The Portuguese made magnificent jewelry during the 18th century, using gems from mines in their colony,Brazil. Chrysoberyl was extremely popular. Considering the techniques available at the time, this jewelry is quite astonishing and this ring is exceptionally well done - both in the cut and setting of the stones and in the fabulous gold work of the bezel. Similar examples are shown in the book Five Centuries of Jewellery from the National Mueum of Ancient Art, Lisbon, page 89. Description: Navette shaped ring. Particularly long and elegant. The outer border is beaded gold. Within a border of chrysoberyl, with large, flat tables. Within, an elongated flower and foliage, with openwork scrolling silver, the metal used to set stones during this period. Stones are beautifully matched and lively. The back of the bezel indicates further that this was a particularly luxurious ring. Instead of the usual closed back, it consists of a silver openwork base, conforming to the shape of the ring. Above this are scrolling gold threads that continue to the shoulders. This work lifts the ring above the level of the finger, adding to eye-appeal and focus. Marks: The ring was stamped 9ct at a much later date.
