1787 Fugio Restrike Copper PCGS - $600 - (North Clarendon, VT)
Bright, superb brass toning with smooth, attractive surfaces. Some raised granularity is seen within the metal around the chain, as struck, free of notable marks. Sharp, complete details and legends. A fantastic example of this Fugio Restrike. 1787 Fugio Restrike: The New Haven Restrikes were produced circa 1860 in copper, brass, and silver. Reportedly at least one example was struck in gold. Although numismatist Horatio N. Rust recounted that he had located the original dies for the Fugio cents from the previous century, it is clear that these were newly created dies, likely by the Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury, Connecticut, shortly before the Civil War. Because they are virtually identical to the original design, these New Haven Restrikes are highly collectible with demand from colonial type collectors and others. According to the journal notice Rust used these dies to strike off three to four hundred copies of the Fugio cent in copper as well as some in silver and gold at the Scovill mint in Waterbury.
