Jane Cowl "MERCHANT OF YONKERS" Thornton Wilder ("Hello, Dolly") 1939 Playbill - $100 - (Cannon Beach, OR)

This is a beautiful January 2nd, 1939 playbill from the opening week of the Original Broadway production of the THORNTON WILDER comedy "THE MERCHANT OF YONKERS" which played the Guild Theatre in New York City. (The production opened December 28th, 1938 and ran for only 39 performances.) ..... The play would have remained obscure had it not been re-written as "THE MATCHMAKER" in 1955 and eventually become the source material for JERRY HERMAN'S musical comedy hit "HELLO, DOLLY!". The play starred JANE COWL (shown in the cover photo) as "Mrs. Levi" and featured PERCY WARAM as "Horace Vandergelder", TOM EWELL as "Cornelius Hackl" and JOHN CALL as "Barnaby Tucker". Others in the cast included BARTLETT ROBINSON, PHILIP COOLIDGE, CARRIE WELLER, FRANCES HARISON, JOSEPH SWEENEY, JUNE WALKER, NYDIA WESTMAN, EDWARD F. NANNARY, MAX WILLENZ, PETER STRUWEL, MAIDA READE and MINNA PHILLIPS ..... CREDITS: Book by THORNTON WILDER; Sets designed by BORIS ARONSON; Staged by MAX REINHARDT; Produced by HERMAN SHUMLIN ..... DETAILS: The 18 page playbill measures 6 3/4" X 9 1/4" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, bios of each of the leading actors and wonderful vintage advertising but with the exception of the front cover, no cast photos ..... CONDITION: This rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
