Scarce Model 1872 Regulation Light Artillery Dress Uniform Coat. - $3,100 - (Ashburnham, MA)

Scarce Model 1872 Regulation Light Artillery Dress Uniform Coat, issued to an enlisted man of the 1st U.S. Artillery Regiment. This pattern coat is identical to the cavalry EM coat with exception of all facings and piping are in artillery scarlet. Unlike the dismounted coats of this period, the mounted coat is shorter in length, with slashes from hem to hip to allow more movement for rider, and all mounted coats had piping on the hem, whereas dismounted had raw edges only. All original buttons, one recently re-sewn, regimental numerals on half collar facings, and some restoration to the tail facings. The inside lining is very good, with left arm pit lining needing repair. Nice stencil maker (G.A. Cowles & Co.), and USQMD/ Inspector marking on lower back lining. remnants of original label remains on inside collar. This is a size "3." There is some light moth tracking on the coat, and a few smaller moth holes that are hardly noticeable. The tail facings were found with a good deal of mothing, and it is here were the restoration was done; a most credible work was done! There is some soiling to the scarlet, but does not detract. There were only 4 regiments of artillery from the Civil War to 1901, and within these regiments, I believe that only 2 companies out of the regiment were designated as light artillery, making these coat quite scarce.
