Vintage clay lined Chinese utility basket. These baskets were clay lined so that they could be used for transporting everything needed, including water, by people living in rural areas. The baskets are constructed of a heavy reed about 1/4" in diameter interwoven with strips of a natural, manila type, fiber and covered, inside and out, with a thin layer of clay. There is a heavy bent wood handle held in place by a metal stays. The metal stays are secured by a 4" wide canvas strip that covers the upper edge of the basket. It too, is covered in clay. The interior bottom of the basket is reinforced with fabric and covered with clay. Dimensions: 13 1/2" tall x 13" across the mouth.
