Ostensibly, an early Tiffany presentation sword with a history of that. Capt O'Brien was a officer served in volunteer quartermaster dept from Oct 1861 until his death on Oct 25th, 1863.His state of residence is given as Missouri , also he may have been a militia officer.Brass hilt has a really nice dull and uncleaned-untouched look. Brass handle retains ca 95% Silver plating,with a small amount of thinning on the outer edges. Blade bright and gently cleaned showing light stain spot and small areas of salt & pepper pitting. Etched panels are very clear,sharp, and legible . Brass fittings on scabbard have original gold gilt and have tarnished look. Traces of gold in protected areas.
