1 of 5 in my collection, the first picture was taken at home in a more natural light, the remaining pictures are under fluorescent - Early 19th century Qing Dynasty Scroll Painting showing a Second Rank Mandarin Court Official seated in hieratic posture on a wooden chair with his wife similarly posed to his right, both are clothed in a richly ornamented Formal court dress. The man in a Purple and Azure Blue Chaopao with 8 Auspicious Shou Medallions painted in gold. His Matriarch is also wearing a Chaopao, Orange, with a Mandarin square featuring a Golden Pheasant signifying that the sitter is the wife of a senior civil official of the second rank. These squares are also known as a Badge of Rank. 8 Gold Twin Phoenix rondels decorate the robe. Her hair is decorated in an elaborate coiffer. The background of this Scroll shows a 5-Panel Room Divider screen of a traditional Chinese mountain landscape painting with brushwork in the manner of Chinese Painter & Visual Artist Shen Zhou, (1427 - 1509). This separate painting is quite well done all in itself with amazing attention to detail showing the aerial perspective with small fishing boats, gondolas and pine tree studded Rocky cliffs and Mountain faces. This Scroll was likely painted in the 1830s to 1840s, possibly as late as the 1880s Verso of painting has stylized archaic Chinese calligraphy translated as "Painting of Ancestor with two people Qing Dynasty" Painted with watercolors and mineral pigment ink on paper, mounted to Silk with top and bottom dowells/rods, silk tie ribbon. Painting is in excellent condition showing wear commensurate with age... yellowing, some light spotting / foxing, minor smudging, creases, color transfer, surface cracks in the paint, slight lacquer loss on wood handles ... overall excellent, finely rendered Large at 228 x 106 cm ( 90 inches x 41.75) inches ).
