Batu Ulik - Mortar and Pestle Atoni People South Coastal Region West Timor 3.75" X 2.25" X 2.25"pestle 7" X 6" X 2.75" mortar - quartzite 3.120 KG age - possibly neolithic ANCIENT ARTIFACT The history of early human habitation in the far flung archipelago has had little study. Prehistoric cave art can be found in Tutuala on the northern tip of the island. The present day Atoni people trace their ancestry to a wave of immigration from the north 16 generations ago. There was undoubtedly a small native population of subsistence farmers prior to that but their history has not been fully explored. This quartzite mortar and pestle is ancient. The mortar bears evidence of being used as a hammer. There is betel stain on the active surfaces of both mortar and pestle. A rare and outstanding artifact. The bowl is .75" at deepest.
