Description: Pair of Two (2) Cast Lead Bookends of the bust of Mephistopheles (Mephisto) - featured in the “Faust” German legend as an agent of the devil who tempts a man to give up his soul for worldly success and pleasure. Very Heady solid lead - at only about 4” tall they each weigh over 3 lbs. Solid lead bookends were mostly made in the late 19th to early 20th centuries - these appear old. Both are unmarked but subject matter leads us to believe they were made in Germany or possibly Russia. Condition: Excellent (See All Photos) Very light surface wear - likely from manufacture or age - nothing obvious or bothersome. No dents, cracks or repairs.
