NASA Space Shuttle Carrier Aircraft w/Space Shuttle Riding "Piggyback" Stamp - $25 - (Oswego, NY)

On May 7, 1991, the Space Shuttle orbiter "Endeavour" arrived at the Kennedy Space Center's landing area "piggybacked" on top of NASA's new Space Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA). This stamp depicts this great accomplishment in U.S. history. The SCS (a modified Boeing 747) is shown preparing to take off from NASA's Dryden Flight Research Facility to deliver the orbiter to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Shuttle Carrier Aircrafts (SCAs) were used to ferry Space Shuttles from landing sites back to the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) at the Kennedy Space Center, and to and from other locations too distant for the orbiters to be delivered by ground transport. The orbiters were placed on top of the SCAs by Mate-Demate Devices, large gantry-like structures that hoisted the orbiters off the ground for post-flight servicing then mated them with the SCAs for ferry flights. Ferry flights generally transported the orbiters from Edwards Air Force Base, the shuttle's secondary landing site, to the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) at the Kennedy Space Center where the orbiter was processed. The stamp and envelope are standard size. The Scott #3262 1998 $11.75 Piggyback Space Shuttle Express Mail was issued by the U.S. Post Office on November 19, 1998, New York, NY. The stamp is new and is protected by the original packaging, and is a "must have" for all stamp collectors and space enthusiasts.
