The bronze doré base is comprised of three up-turned dolphins on a plinth base and the vase topped with a reeded cap and fluted stem. The Chinese sang de boeuf vase with its flambe glaze is of exceptional quality and probably dates to the 19th century. The plinth base is incised "Made in France" (see photograph). This lamp has been completely restored and rewired with silk/rayon cord and double s-cluster sockets with two pull-chain controls. The paper shade with its black exterior and mottled-gold foil interior is new as is the frosted Lucite diffuser. The double s-sockets hold Edison-based bulbs. Sang de boeuf, (French: “oxblood”) also called flambe´ glaze, sang de boeuf: A glossy, rich, blood-red glaze often slashed with streaks of purple or turquoise used to decorate pottery, particularly porcelain. The effect is produced by a method of firing that incorporates copper, a method first discovered by the Chinese of the Ming dynasty, probably during the reign of Wanli (1573-1620). Examples of this older work are now extremely rare. The process was at first difficult to control, but it had been mastered by the time of Kanxi (1661-1722) and Qianlong (1736-1796) in the Qing dynasty, and Chuihong or “blown red” glaze ware, bec…
