2017 2 oz British Silver Queen’s Beast Griffin Coin - Brilliant Uncirculated - $51 - (Baileyville, ME)

This is the second coin in a ten coin series issued by The Royal Mint of England. It is the Griffin of Edward III. The first coin was the Lion of England. The Griffin is a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. This powerful creature, combining the king of the beasts and the king of the birds, is often depicted as a guardian of treasure or valuables. The Griffin represents courage, strength, and vigilance. At the coronation of the Queen in 1953, ten heraldic beasts stood guard. The six foot tall beasts were sculpted by James Woodford. These heraldic beasts symbolized the various strands of Royal ancestry brought together in the newly crowned Queen. Today these Queens Beasts can be found at The Canadian Museum of History in Quebec. Now these mythical, ancient creatures--lions, griffin, falcon, bull, yale, greyhound, unicorn, and horse--have gone on to inspire the Royal Mint coin designer, Jody Clark to create these beautiful two troy ounce works of art in .999 pure silver.
