60+ Raw Petoskey Stones. These were all mostly collected along Lake Michigan in Northern Michigan. These are all recent finds from a recent walk down the beach in Northport Michigan. The Petoskey Stone History Petoskey Stones are fossilized coral that grew and thrived only in Northern Michigan. They are believed to be from the Devonian Age which is considered to be 350 million years ago. At that time Michigan seemed to be a shallow sea. Petoskey Stones are found nowhere else in the world. The Petoskey Stones scientific name is Hexagonaria, meaning that it has six sides. These were a colonial coral and can be found along Northern Michigan beaches and gravel pits. The Petoskey Stone can also be found with other Michigan Corals and Fossils, sometimes many found in same rock.
