ARTIST OTTO VAN VEEN, AFTER GERTRUDIS FILIAS PRINTER NICOLAS DE LARMESSIN- Dutch print publisher SUBJECT DANIEL HENSIUS- DUTCH POET, 1580-1655 PERIOD 16TH - 17TH CENTURY WORK IN NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OTHER SUBJECTS RENE DESCARTES, QUEEN MARY II, NUMEROUS OTHER NOBLES AND ARTISTS SOURCE ORIGINAL BOOKPLATE FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTOR . An interesting engraving on many levels. The artist Otto Van Veen ( aka Octavio Vaenius), a painter, draftsman and humanist was also the teacher of Peter Paul Ruebens. This engraving is after the style of Gertrudis Filias, herself a successful female artist in the middle ages.It is cut from a Dutch Emblem Book from 1608. Emblem Books originating as a literary genre in Italy, were the first magazines, filled with pictures - engravings- moralistic advice and commentary. The condition is excellent. This is unframed, 9" by 6" From the collection of my late father Jon Manchip White ( please see Wikipedia entry for more info), a Cambridge University educated archaeologist, anthropologist, Egyptologist, author and art collector.
