Silk Dragon Robe This beautiful black silk robe is from the Ch’ing Dynasty (1644-1921). This summer robe is in perfect condition and weighs less than a pound. The large dragon and phoenix motifs make this special. The robe was made at the Imperial Silk Factory in the Forbidden City. It was made for an official of the first order. Only he could wear this, it is a sign of palace rank. The capital was called Peking until it was changed to Beijing in 1949. Besides the large dragon and phoenix motifs, the sleeve bands are embroidered all around with characters telling the story of court life. Other characters include bats, clouds, peonies, lotus, flowers, smoking jars and more. They all have their own mysterious meanings.
