2015 Palau Rainbow, Silver Pearl of the Sea Marine Life Protection - $69 - (New York Mills, MN)
The popular and successful Marine Life Protection series has got a new brilliant pearl coin of an unusual concave shape. Struck from 1 oz silver 999, it boasts a real freshwater pearl insert and vibrant colors, hence the name of the coin. On the obverse, there is a stylized composition including a shield with Neptune holding his trident, a mermaid by his side and an open treasure chest. The upper part of the coin comprises the inscription indicating the name of the issuing country. Below the composition, there is the legend denoting the face value of the Palau coin. Most of the reverse is occupied by the image of a Haliotis tuberculata or the green ormer with a pearl embedded into it. It’s a maritime snail species which is mainly found in the Mediterranean but also in the Eastern Atlantic. This sea dweller is often mistaken for a mussel because of its shape as well as its ability to create pearls just like a mussel does. The marine snail is an endangered species and regionally protected in various ways. The inscriptions on the reverse include: the names of the coin and series, as well as the issuing year. The previous editions of the Palau pearl series were quite successful, so don’t miss one of those 2 500 pearl coins that will become yours!
