Welcome to Antiques & Moore!THIS LISTING IS FOR AN UNUSUAL ENGLISH BLACK LACQUERED PAPIER MACHE LAP DESK/WRITING SLOPE WITH ELABORATE MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID CHINOISIERE DECORATION, c. 1850. THIS BEAUTIFUL LAP DESK HAS A GLOSSY BLACK LACQUERED FINISH THAT HAS BEEN BEAUTIFULLY HAND DECORATED ON THE TOP, SIDES, REAR, UNDERSIDE OF LID, PEN TRAY AND INNER COMPARTMENT LID. THERE IS EVEN INLAY TO THE UNDERSIDE OF WRITING SURFACE IN BOTH MOTHER-OF-PEARL AND ABALONE SHELL INLAY. FEATURES CHINOISIERE DESIGN WITH TEMPLE, FLOWERS, BIRDS AND PALM TREES, ETC.INTERIOR WRITING SURFACE IS COVERED WITH GOLD TOOLED LEATHER. INTERIOUR HAS TWO BRASS-TOP INKWELLS, A PEN TRAY, A LIDDED COMPARTMENT WITH VELVET INSERT AND TWO COMPARTMENTS FOR STAMPS OR PEN NIBS. THE REAR HINGES ARE TIGHT ALTHOUGH THEY APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN RESET AT ONE TIME (VERY WELL DONE) WITH THE BOX OPENING AND CLOSING CORRECTLY. LAP DESK HAS LOCKING MECHANISM INTACT WITH KEY. MEASURES 3 1/2" HIGH, 10" WIDE AND 14" DEEP. WEIGHS 4.0 POUNDS. THE BOX IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION SHOWING ONLY MINIMAL SIGNS OF NORMAL WEAR. NO NOTED FLAWS.
