About HERMAN HERMAN first appeared in major city newspapers on November 4th, 1974, making creator Jim Unger an international sensation. Winner of two Reuben Awards for Best Newspaper Panel from the National Cartoonist Society, Unger’s unique illustrative style and brilliant wit influenced a generation of comic creators who followed. The British-born cartoonist immigrated to Canada and was soon discovered by the American-based Universal Press Syndicate (now Universal Uclick). The iconic comic legend, who influenced a generation of newspaper cartoonists, died of heart failure at his home in 2012. His legacy and the groundbreaking newspaper comic panel remains a regular feature on the comic pages and in millions of book collections sold in more than 25 countries. About the Original Artwork Prior to the use of personal computers, comic artists drew each comic with a stick pen and bottle of ink. Borders were hand-measured and created with a ruler, and stick-on Letratone was used to create dots and patterns for shading. Unger produced the comic panel to tight daily syndicate deadlines, who would photographed and print six-up on a page, known as “slicks” for distribution to newspapers. After reproduction, the original artwork was then returned to Unger.
