THOMAS EDISON. Edison Botanic Research Corporation (EBRC) business check filled out in another hand and signed by “Thos A. Edison” with his bold ‘umbrella’ signature payable to William A. Benney for $190. Edison believed that the United States was becoming too dependent on the foreign supply of rubber so he partnered with Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone to create the EBRC in 1927. For the next two years at the EBRC’s laboratory, Edison, his son Charles, and Benney searched and successfully discovered a domestic source of natural rubber. This check was more than likely an employment check for Benney’s services. BUSINESS CHECK SIGNED BY THOMAS EDISON PAYABLE TO A CRITICAL SCIENTIST WHO HELPED EDISON DISCOVER A DOMESTIC SOURCE OF NATURAL RUBBER The check measures 8.25” by 3”, is stamp-dated September 28, 1928, is in fine condition with only the cancellation holes, and is accompanied with a presentation page with a full description of Edison’s life achievements. Three similar checks signed by Thomas Edison recently sold for $1,934 in October of 2010, $1,490 in March of 2012, and $1,449 in December of 2014 at RR Auction.
