Rare 1795 DeWitt Clinton Autograph Document Signed, Plus 1823 Folded Letter Very early Document signed by Clinton, while he was secretary to his uncle George Clinton, who was then governor of New York. He was only 25 years old at the time It is dated Feb 1, 1795, and is a receipt for $1000.00 from Asa Danforth. Jr.There is a reddish stain at upper right. Asa Danforth Jr June 29, (1768 – c. 1821) was one of the first citizens of Onondaga County, New York, when he arrived there with his father, Asa Danforth in 1788. Danforth incurred heavy debts speculating in land in New York State. Hoping to reverse his fortunes, he invested in the especially risky land titles of nearby Upper Canada and later was a highway engineer. Also included is a folded letter carried outside the mail date July 23 1823, it is unsigned and probably penned by a secretary. It conveys compliments to a Mrs Miller, and mentions making an inscription in her album. It is a folded letter, and was undoubtedly carried outside the mail. This was just after his term as Governor expired and while he was President of the Erie Canal Commission DeWitt Clinton (March 2, 1769 – February 11, 1828) was an American Lawyer and statesman. He served as secretary to his Uncle Gov. George Clinton from 1790-95, New York Assembly 1798 New York Senate 1798-1802, 1806-11 US Senator 1802-03 Mayor of New York CIty 1803-7, 1810, 1811, 1813, 1813-15 Governor of New York 1817-22, 1825-28 Member of the Erie Canal Commission from 1810 to 1824.Although not authenticated, I unconditionally guarantee that this is a genuine signed document of De Witt Clinton.
