Haida Ernest Swanson Red Cedar 36" Diameter Eagle Panel Northwest Coast Native - $5,000 - (Vancouver, BC)

This jaw-dropping and monumental Haida panel measures 36" in diameter and is 2" thick. It was carved in 2015 by up-and-coming Northwest Coast Native artist, Ernest Swanson. It is titled Eagle's Introspection and shows the head of the eagle on the top half and the bird's wing along the bottom half. Ernest has also cleverly included a Salmon design in the wing of the eagle. Ernest was born in 1981 and began engraving in 2004 under Haida jeweller, Jim McGuire. Ern comes from a long line of established artists. His cousin is popular carver Jim Hart and his grandfather was prolific argillite carver, Rufus Moody. In 2005, he started carving wood with Christian White. This same year, he also won an ‘Emerging Artist’ award from British Columbia’s Alliance of Arts and Culture. In 2009, Ern graduated from Vancouver's Northwest Coast Jewellery Arts program under established Haida/Kwakwaka'wakw artist, Dan Wallace. In 2010, Ernest worked on a large pole with Jim Hart at the Bill Reid Gallery in Vancouver. In 2014, he released a limited edition print of an octopus titled 'Sense of Nuu'. Recently, he has been creating miniature argillite pendants with engraved silver bezel settings and abalone inlays. Golden Eagles and Bald Eagles can be found all along the coast of British Columbia and are acknowledged as a symbol of pride, friendship and knowledge, within and without First Nations culture. Within Native culture, Eagles have always been revered for their hunting skills and extraordinary vision. Due to their noble traits and presence along the Northwest Coast of North America, the Eagle has been adopted as a primary family crest among many First Nations. The Eagle crest is particularly prominent among the northern Haida, Tsimshian, Heiltsuk and Tlingit cultures. The other prominent crest figure within British Columbia’s First Nations is the Raven.
