It was so named because members of the faculty and student body of Mckendree College in Lebanon Illinois responded to lincoln’s call for additional troops. Enough men were enlisted to make up the future company C besides the regimental commanding officer and his staff. This provided the nucleus needed for what later became the 117th regiment. They all volunteered in good faith with the understanding that they would do whenever was necessary to help win the war.
